Abstract
Dredging projects and the construction or expansion of port installations can involve a number of laws, regulations and directives. This document is an introduction to these administrative and legal provisions, and their accompanying obligations and requirements; it also looks at the applicability of such provisions to a given project based on the project characteristics. Marine construction is subject first and foremost to a variety of environmental regulations. Such projects, however, must also be undertaken in accordance with provisions in the directives and regulations governing land use, shipping, waste management and the protection of natural resources. The existing regulatory framework is nonetheless in the process of being modified and, consequently, this guide will be reviewed and corrected, either in the short or medium term.
