Abstract
Model simulations of atmospheric composition on a pan-Arctic domain at 15-km horizontal resolution were carried out for the year 2015 and for summer 2014. Through a series of sensitivity studies and analysis, we show that (1) biogenic emissions from northern boreal regions play an important role in controlling oxidation capacity over the northern high latitudes; (2) the Arctic is impacted by northern boreal fire emissions during the summer; while Eurasian (Siberian) fires mostly impact the European Arctic, the north American boreal fires dominate the impact over eastern and central Arctic; (3) deposition processes, both dry and wet deposition, are particularly important in affecting the air pollution levels in the Arctic. This study also includes a preliminary investigation on the impact of SO2 emissions from natural fires, fueled by pyrites and organic materials, at the Smoking Hills in Northwest Territories.
