Abstract
Bacillus megaterium is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium of biotechnological importance. Here, we report a 5.7-Mbp draft genome sequence of B. megaterium ATCC 14581, which is the type strain of the species.
Plain language summary
Under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, Health Canada is obligated to assess risks to Canadians from micro-organisms on the Domestic Substances List (DSL). Bacillus megaterium ATCC 14581 is both a bacterium on the DSL and the reference or type strain of the species. In this study, Health Canada scientists determined the whole genome sequence information of the bacterium in order to contribute information on its characteristics (including any pathogenic properties) to facilitate current risk assessment efforts, to enable comparative analyses with different Bacillus species and to allow a better understanding and analysis of any future biotechnology applications.
