Abstract
Agriculture is a major component of the Quebec economy. However, this activity can have detrimental effects on grassland birds that nest or feed in these environments. In partnership with numerous collaborators, Environment and Climate Change Canada's Canadian Wildlife Service has produced an action plan to prioritize actions aimed at reconciling agricultural production and the conservation of grassland birds. Using the Conservation Standards, the action plan contains seven conservation strategies to reduce the impact of pressures affecting grassland birds and barn swallows, such as early hay mowing, loss of nesting habitat, and indoor livestock rearing. The seven conservation strategies developed in the action plan are:
These strategies are developed with the needs of producers in mind, so that the farming practices adopted maintain profitable farms that provide ecosystem services to society. The feasibility of implementation, an estimate of the relative cost and a timetable are also proposed for each conservation action; as are several considerations relating to the implementation of the action plan, including regional prioritization, available funding, governance and a monitoring plan with indicators.
