Abstract

This report summarizes our literature review of in cab warning systems; alarm handling and train operator behaviour modelling; alarm management; human factor issues for in-cab warning systems; and alarm related accidents within the railway and other industries. Existing systems focus on the prevention of signal passed at danger (or STOP), overspeed, and collisions. These systems have increased in capability, from simple warning of signal indications to monitoring of speed and automated braking to ensure compliance. Research shows the limitations of train operators to handle alarms primarily related to workload, with their response varying greatly across individuals and situations. Our review of accidents in the railway industry and other industries is used to demonstrate how poor alarm design and management can result in unintended responses from train operators and accidents.
