Abstract
The effect of shape on the fall velocity of an irregular solid particle is considered in this paper. The various definitions of the shape factor (which accounts for the effects of shape) existing in the literature are reviewed in the light of the experimental data and it is concluded that the definition proposed by H. Wadell can be adequate shape factor for sediment particles moving in river systems. A generalized empirical equation is developed to predict the fall velocity of spherical particles over a wide range of flow regimes.
